A very delicate nose, then, slowly, it’s showtime for wild strawberries, red currants, raspberries, fragrant roses and rhubarb. The palate is delightful; the red fruit is on the verge of being candied. But, good news, the alcohol doesn’t hit you in the face, the moderate acidity lingers, and that reserved fruit slowly rolls across the tongue, like words spelled by a non-English speaker (except me because I speak too fast). From 80-year-old vines from Vine Vale. As I keep typing, the fruit profile is still mingling around, rightfully showing me the middle finger and saying: “I’m here; just stop for a moment and look at me”.
Munda Ngadjuri + Peramangk Grenache 2023
As I gaze at the glass, the fine bead of bubbles, reminiscent of my grandma’s cherished pearls, takes centre stage. This is a testament to the exceptional quality of this sparkling champagne method, which is a privilege to savour. The nose opens with a symphony of Golden Delicious apples, Meyer lemons, dried chamomile flowers, wild strawberries, and red currants. Then it’s time for warm, oven-baked bread, fragrant croissants, lemon meringue, a lick of honey, and apple tartlets with a generous scoop of fresh cream on the side. I love how the bubbles caress my tongue and how the acidity sits on the mid-palate, adding flesh to the bones of this sophisticated yet flavoursome sparkling wine. The finish is endless, alternating between fruit characters and those derived from the patient, a long game of resting the wine on its lees. The hand of the winemaker here has magnificently conducted like the best of the orchestra’s directors.
Brown Brothers Patricia Pinot Noir & Chardonnay Brut 2018
A flinty gunpowder note jumps out of the glass at the first sniff. Then, it’s time for salted pink grapefruit, freshly squeezed lime, and pineapple slices. Before I even tasted it, I could already sense a coolness and saltiness in this Great Southern Riesling. Highly tight and citrusy, mandarins, lime, lemons, grapefruits. My daily vitamin C boost, please, and thanks. A narrow, yet clean, finish of the palate. Still a young puppy with a promising future.
